Patios Knowledge Base
Has anyone ever used those concrete molds for patios/walkways? I need to know how those work? You know, the mold that looks like stone and you fill it with concrete and make a path or do a patio with it? The instructions say to pour cement into the mold then remove it and rotate and repeat. What I want to know. Can you fill it with cement and remove it right away like it says to....or will the cement just run back together? Do I have to let it dry a while? That will take forever if I do...but want to do it right the first time. Thanks!!!! If you're not going to answer the question that I asked...then DON"T ANSWER!! If I wanted to buy a crate of stone ....I WOULD!!! But the project I'm doing would cost WELL over $200 to complete in stone...hence the cement mold!
Any experience with crushed rock patios? I'm planning to build an informal patio and interested in learning more about the durability (particularly in a rainy climate) of crushed rock (1/4-) as a surface material. I would compact it well with a plate compactor.
Was it wrong to use stonedust mixed with gravel in the bases for my in-progress flagstone and brick patios? I have two patio now under construction in my backyard, in holes I dug mostly myself to a depth of from 10 to 18 inches. One, to be covered using flagstone, is 500 sq. ft, while the circular one, to be paved with brick, is of 14 ft diameter. The contractor indicated he would lay grade "B" gravel underneath and grade "A" 3/4" stone in the next layer, both on top of geotextile, and compact every 2 inches. He did lay the geotextile, but put down a combination of what looks more like stonedust mixed with gravel,. He didn't even try to compact until the end. As we understand it, the will cause water to accumulate like a sponge. We live in Ottawa, Canada, where there is lots of freezing and unfreezing due to seasonal changes, and you can imagine what problems with the base that might cause. Note that the holes holding the base stone do not drain water well anyways, due to clay bottoms. Nevertheless, is there a justification for what has been put down as a base?
Best patios in Mississauga, Ontario for an afternoon drink? I was just wondering what people's opinions are on the best patio bars in Mississauga to go have a pint on a nice sunny afternoon. My two favourites are Cucculain's in Streetsville and The Muddy Moose, at erin mills parkway and queen st. Any other places worthy of me and the lads exploration??
smokers to be banned from outside patios? This is the latest. Banning them because they are within 20 ft of the door and the smoke waifs in. And people worry about getting the second hand stuff. If the door is open, what about the automobile exhaust? Carbon monoxide kills or will get you deathly ill.? If they don't want smokers then cigarette sales should be stopped. But we never hear anything about that solution. Why not?
Cost effective paving and patios? We have a big drive way which is kind of falling apart. But since we need to move out of this property we have to takle this. Can anyone suggest what is the cheapest option and if possible name of the company. We really donot want to spend a lots of money.Thank you.
Cold Weather Climate Brick Patios? We are interested in building a paver-brick type patio to replace our wood deck outside in the back yard. Don't know anyone who has one and we live in Alaska. I just keep wondering if there is a website or informational place to find out about the feasability of such an undertaking? Biggest concern is "frost heaves".
Outdoor Cafes or Patios in Toronto? I am a long time Toronto resident, born and raised, but I often have a hard time finding nice outddor cafes or patios to hang out at? Any recommedations of some really great unique places, (kinda like the ones you can find in Montreal), within the Greater Toronto Area? Thanks!
