Is there a product that safely removes ice from wood decks? My mother and grandmother share a joint backyard wood deck. In the winter it naturally accumulates ice patches. We have been looking for a product, such as sidewalk salt that can be put down in order to help melt the ice, to not only make walking safer, but the ice removal easier? Is there a product out there that can safely remove the ice? I'm figuring ordinary sidewalk salt, or the chemical varieties would damage the wood somehow. I've read that you can put down kitty litter for traction, but I was looking for something that would actually help to melt the ice. Any ideas?

Question regarding the arsenic used in the wood on decks? I have a deck built preceding 2003, when arsenic was discontinued from use on wood, so it's probable that the wood on my deck contains arsenic. Now, prelude aside.. It has not rained in a week. I dropped a comb on the deck, picked it back up, and continued combing my hair. Is it possible that any arsenic clung to the comb, and then got into my scalp? I washed my hair afterwards, to be safe.

Using indoor wood stain on outdoor decks/patio? I recently hired someone to powerwash and stain my deck. He said he would be using a very good quality oil based stain. After he was done staining, me and my husband realized that he had used the Miniwax Woodfinish generally used for indoor staining on our deck. Although, the deck doesn't look too bad, just has some shiny patches we were more worried if it would be protected enough by this stain? Do I need to call him back and ask him to use the outdoor stain, is it possible at all now?
Is there a way to test deck wood to see if power wash is necessary? How long should one wait before sealing or staining decks and fences - is there a rule of thumb with how quickly grime sets in where you have to treat the wood first before staining. Any opinions on what to use other than power washing to clean the wood. Also, since oil-based stain is going to be banned, what water-based stain and colors work well and how long do they last.
Bleach spilled on my brand new wood deck. How can I keep it from leaving bleach spots? I just built a new deck 2 weeks ago and have not sealed or stained it yet. My neighbor had someone come and pressure wash his townhouse. They came onto my deck to clean the side of his house. They were using bleach and water and it splashed all over my deck and they didn't spray it off afterward. The bleachy water sat on my deck in the sun all day until it dried. I went out and tried to scrub the wood with water and a brush when I got home and saw it and it did nothing. Now half of my deck is considerably lighter than the rest of the deck. I have 2 questions: 1) Is there anyway to get the bleach spots up before I stain the deck and restore it back to that natural wood look? 2) If The bleach spots don't come up, when I stain the deck will the bleach spots still show through? or will the stain cover up the bleach spots? Thank you for all your help. I spent too much money on a new deck to have half of it stained for life.
Best type of wood for decks? I recently asked to get a few estimates from contractors to build me a deck. I want something nice looking, easy to maintain and long lasting. I was told that pressure treated wood splinters and if you actually get a splinter you can get an infection not to mention the ugly chemical green tint of the wood. So one contractor recommended Cedar - I did a search and read that Red Wood Cedar is great but the contractor wants to use White knotted Cedar. The other contractor recommended Mahogany. Not sure I can afford that or any artificial wood on my budget. Any suggestions out there? Correction - that's "Tight" Knot Cedar that he recommended not "white"
How can I make curved stairs for a wood deck? I want to build a deck with curved stairs leading from a upper deck to a lower deck. The deck itself will be about 16 feet wide and the I envision the center of the stairs being 2 or 3 feet further out than the ends of the stairs, giving a radius of roughly 8.5 feet to the circle inscribed by each tread. Is it possible to bend the wood across its width? If so, how? Or do I need to simply lay the boards parallel to the deck and then trim the ends?
Any suggestions on a good wood deck preservative coating? I have a wood pressure treated deck around a pool with 700 sq ft. When should we seal our treated wood deck? My husband and I had a new deck put in with treated wood. It was built the first of June 08. We live in SE Texas (about 100 miles N of Houston). It hasn't rained a whole lot here. When the deck was put in the person told us that if it rained average then we should seal it in December. But, the wood is starting to get the cracked look like it's already dry. Could it be that we already need to seal it? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

When building a wood deck is it best to use screws or nails on the flooring? I have seen both and the ones with screws looked better and more stable. However, I just got a quote from a contractor and he said he would use nails because of the holes the screws leave when countersunk. I don't know why that would be a problem and the ones I saw were flush with the flooring. Anybody have any experience with this???
