Looking for decking material to put under a tent platform? I want to build a deck platform (about 8 feet off the ground)outside and place a wall tent on it for 6 months a year. I don't want wood because it will draft cold air from below. I think that concrete is too heavy to pour. I need to clean it off easily as well. In the winter, the ground freezes but there is not a whole lot of snow.

Need advice on decking material.? I am building a small deck soon and need to narrow down a material. I have used pressure treated wood and it has not preformed well. I also researched composite material and have not found it to have a good review. (mold issues) Fir is not something I have knowledge about. So...anyone have any first hand experience with fir or composite material for use in a deck?
Best picnic table material composite decking? My husband and I are looking at getting a picnic table and are thinking of buying the metal frame either online or from ACE hardware and then using composite wood like the composite decking for the top and seats as it would not need to be restained ever and would not rot or cause splinters. I was wondering if there would be any forseeable problems with using composite decking for a picnic table? Would a variety of wood be better?

Composite decking and hidden fasteners - what's your experience? I'm installing a screen porch and plan to use a composite decking material. Has anyone seen or used the Monarch Exotics (Tigerwood color) brand decking and if so what is your experience? I selected it because it looks more like real wood than any other composite product I've seen and it has a 20-year warranty. I'd also like to use a hidden/concealed fastener and I'm considering the Invisi-Fast hidden deck fastener. Has anyone used those before? Any insight you can share regarding these products or other products that you would recommend would be very helpful!

Need guideance to best composite material for deck? Hello. I am planning to replace my deck with a larger one, and plan to use composite floor and hand rail systems to avoid the hassles of constant maintenance. I'm encountering various products, each claiming to be the best. In my area, we have Choice-Dek, Cross-Timbers, Evergrain, Timber-Tech, Trex and Veranda, mostly. Is there a carpenter/builder/remodeling expert, out there who has built a lot of decks and who would know which of these products to recommend? I know of no other source to poll for this kind of information. Also find Xtendex, and GeoDeck brands in my area.
What can be safely used to remove ice on Trex decking? We have a deck of the manufactured Trex material. What can be used for ice buildup or to provide traction on it without damaging the deck? We were told not to use salt. We usually just put birdseed on after shoveling, but we got freezing rain and cold wind and have very slippery spots.
gas spill on eon decking? i recently experienced a power outage in my area so i staged an auxilary generator on our eon deck to power the essential components of the house. i woke up to turn it back on this morning and gasoline spilled over a large area of the deck. i dont know how long it was there but there was a reaction with the deck material. it is discolored and "gummy" in some areas.......anybody know what the best course of action is (without replacing it)?
Best material to use on a roof for our deck? We our covering our deck with a roof. We were wondering if anyone has any suggestions on which material to use out of the three. Metal, PVC, or Fiberglass? We are afraid that the metal will be too hot and make our deck a sauna, is this true? And what about the wear and tear on PVC and Fiberglass, does it crack easily after a few years in direct sun and snow?
Can I use composite material for the top layer of a parking deck? I'm looking to resurface my parking deck. I've been told of the benefits of composite decking (Trex, Weatherbest, etc.) but I don't know if they are appropriate for a parking deck and the load of supporting a car. The joists are 24" center to center. Thanks! In response to some of the answers: The support structure is massively strong and has some heavy duty steel braces and 5" x 7" joists. The home inspector actually marvelled at the strength of the parking deck as well as the other decks.
Is there a rubberized material which can be used to cover a roof to make a deck? We have a new rolled flat roof and want to install a deck on it. Wood is too heavy and vinyl't too expensive. We can't use a water soluble product because there are some areas where water pools when it rains. Does anyone make some sort of rubberized material which can be laid over the roofing material or sprayed onto the rolled roofing which is durable enough to make a deck?
Home Deck Material? Hi - Do you have any comments regarding the pros and cons of using composite material (like tember tech and so forth) for a home deck rather than pressure treated wood?
How do you repair composite decking which has been damaged slightly? I was stupid and put a hot metal object on a composite deck. The two fused together and after prying it off a small chunk about 1-2 inches was taken out of the deck and the area around was slightly blackened. The composite material looks like a compression of wood splinters and plastic of some sort. Is there any way to fix or fill the hole and clean off the blackened area? I honestly don't know what I was thinking but by the time I realized it was too late. I'd appreciate any help I could get. Thanks!
I want to put a hot tube on my deck and I need to know what size beam and posts to use? The hot tub is 7'6" x 7.5' square and has a filled weight of 4000 lbs. I figure I would add another 1000 lbs. for people weight for a total of 5000 lbs. live load. 5000 / (7.5 • 7.5) = 88.9 lbs. per square foot. Plus dead load of 15 psf, and I end up with a total of 104 psf which I need to support. The deck joists will be pressure treated 2x6 place on 16" centers and the top decking material will be 2x6's placed flat on the joists and screwed down with 3" deck screws. What I need to find out is what size beams should I use and how far should I space out my post holes. I want to use pressure treated 4x4 for my posts, placed on concrete pier blocks that will be cemented into my post holes.. I think I have everything covered except how to calculate my beam size, spans and spacing.
how can I clean up a teak oil spill? I spilled teak oil on my deck. The deck is made of some sort of synthetic decking material that looks like wood but feels more rubberized/plastic than wood. Anyway, the spilled oil has left a big stain in the middle of the deck. Any suggestions on how I can clean it up?
Building a deck over an egress window...? We are looking to build a deck over the basement egress window. The inspector told us that we have to install a grate in the deck (as opposed to cutting and hinging a "trap" door in the decking material). Has anyone done this? and any tips on doing so?
what material should i use for an outdoor "wood" deck? i live in a rainy and humid environment and i'm worried that even hardwood would curl and split after just a few years. i'm thinking about composite but have never used it. it'll be a small deck (9x12 plus stairs) and i may add a lower level later. any ideas?
What is the best material for Parging? I removed an old cement set of stairs that had shifted to replace it with a new wooden deck and found a rather large crack. Obviously a cheater foundation was used many years ago for our mud room and it had since shifted. I'd like to patch it up and parge the rest of my old stone foundation. What is the best material to work with? I have cement mix that you add sand and water to and I also have sand mix that you just add water to. Could I use that or should I buy something different?
Which deck material is best? We are going to replace the top boards of our deck and I am not sure which material is the best. The deck is large, 15 feet x 45 feet, and is up high off the main level. Underneath is a patio. The deck structure under the top boards is fine, the problem is that the previous owners went over the old boards with a thin second layer of boards and now all the boards are rotting bad. I am all about keeping costs down as much as possible, and I don't mind the look of pressure treated lumber, but I saw something about leaching arscenic and children?? I also read that composites can't be used this high up... Ideas?

Can someone tell me how much they paid for garden decking? I'm thinking of contructing, or having someone else construct, some decking in my garden. The area is approx 8m by 3m. Has anyone had an area constructed of a similar size - and would you be able to give me a rough idea of what I could end up paying with materials and labour? Many thanks in advance!! Fee
I Just Got a Bid on a New Deck/Patio? We think we were quoted a fair price last night to build a 12 x 16 deck with a 3x3 landing and 13 steps. We live in the Washington, D.C. area. The quote is for the high-quality, maintenance-free compisite decking material. We were quoted $11,800. We were quoted an additional $4,000 for an adjoining brick pavers patio that would include a 6-inch retaining wall. So the whole project is $15k and some change or $11,800 for just the deck itself. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
